Choosing your Bipod

bipods

The bipod not only ensures the stability, essential to precision, but it must also provide comfort to the shooter according to his shooting position.

From a comfort standpoint, if you are in a prone firing position with a target on top of a hill, the bipod should be as high as possible to avoid a very uncomfortable break in the back. On the other hand, if the target is downhill, the bipod must be at the lowest possible position. Otherwise in the case of a Bench Rest, it must be adapted to the size of the shooter's torso, in order to allow him the most upright position possible.

Stability wise, a bipod has a very important role where it must not present any play or wiggle at the joints, nor any legs flexion.

In addition, we must bear in mind that the calibers used for the LRS (Long Range Shooting), cause recoil movements which can be quite violent, and which requires the bipod to be robust enough to support them.

Then comes the ease of use and settings of the bipod, ideally, adjustment controls must be easily accessible when the bipod is mounted on the rifle, and especially they must offer the possibility of changing the settings one handed without having to change the position of the shooter nor of the Rifle.

The bipod should also offer as much flexibility as possible, starting with the mounting system, prefer a bipod with a QD system (Quick Detach) that can be mounted on a Picatinny rail, which gives you the option of taking it apart and to reassemble it quickly either for transport reasons or to use it on several rifles. It should also be flexible in the positions it offers, the ability to adjust the legs independently and at multiple heights and angles, 45 ° or 90 °, to the front or to the back.

The best of the bipods also offers the option of tilting, or tilting and canting, which allows you to fine-tune the position of the rifle without having to move it.

Note that at a certain time, there were no bipods on the market with all of the above qualities. We then heard on the range an eternal debate between the shooters that preferred the shooting bag, which in their opinion absorbed better the recoil and offered more comfort, and the fans of the bipod who retorted that shooting bag was far too heavy and bulky and therefore impractical. Indeed, a shooting bag weighs on average 5 Kg while the bipods of today are mostly between 500 and 800 Gr only.

Fortunately, the materials and technologies now used in the manufacture of shooting equipment are very advanced, which allows us to find products capable of meeting the needs of the most demanding shooters.

Among the most famous manufacturers, you will find the ancestor of the bipod, HARRIS which is still present, but way surpassed by its competitors, which for the majority of them did not exist 10 or 15 years ago, as B&T SHOT, ACCU-SHOT, FORTMEIER, MAGPUL, SPARTAN, TIER ONE, KASTELBERG, etc.. But also, some rifle manufacturers started to make their own bipods like SAKO and PGM.

Among all the brands, two of them stand out, ACCU-SHOT, better known under the name of ATLAS and ACCU-TAC, the last born but with a very clear target, that of becoming the bipods world’s leader.

Indeed, for experienced shooters, ACCU-TAC now embodies the Ideal bipod, with a very complete range that can meet all the needs and budgets of sports shooters. In short, this explains the massive presence of ACCU-TAC bipods in all PRS (Precision Rifle Shooting) competitions, all disciplines combined.

Despite the fact that the ACCU-TAC and ATLAS bipods from ACCU-SHOT are very similar in terms of quality and price, and despite the fact that they use the same materials, finishes and machining precision, ACCU- TAC takes the lead especially thanks to its unique design, devoid of any flexion of the telescopic legs, that can be independently adjusted, and thanks to the adjustment controls which appear to be much more ingenious and practical to use in comparison with those of the ATLAS bipods of ACCU-SHOT. Furthermore, stability wise, ACCU-TAC bipods have the advantage of a wider distance between, the legs either they are deployed or not.

Finally, while the QD (Quick Detach) control remains a chargeable option at Atlas ACCU-SHOT, it is now standard on all GEN 2 bipods from ACCU-TAC.

Never less, ACCU-SHOT with its ATLAS bipods remains the world’s number 2, so you are also assured to make the right choice by choosing a bipod of this brand, if it corresponds better to your desires or your needs.
